The formula
Gratuity = basic monthly wage ÷ 30 × 21 × years of service, after a minimum of one year. Part years count pro rata. This is the legal minimum: many employers, especially in oil and gas and government-related entities, grant 30 days a year by contract. If yours does, multiply the result by 30/21.
Worked example
4 years’ service, QAR 8,000 basic
- Per year: 8,000 ÷ 30 × 21 = QAR 5,600
- Total: QAR 22,400
Related rules
- Qatari nationals are insured with GRSIA (7% employee, 14% employer) rather than relying on gratuity.
- Since September 2026, wages are due on the 1st of each month and must be deposited through WPS within 7 days.

Frequently asked questions
How is gratuity calculated in Qatar?
At least three weeks (21 days) of basic wage for each year of service, pro rata for part years, once the employee has worked for at least one year (Labour Law 14/2004, Art. 54).
Is Qatar gratuity based on basic or total salary?
On the last basic wage. Allowances are excluded unless the contract says otherwise.
Do I lose gratuity if I resign in Qatar?
No. After one year of service, the statutory gratuity is not reduced on resignation. The employer may deduct amounts the employee owes it.
